Ballistic blocks blown off the advancing lava flow.

Some lava fragments resulting from surtseyan explosions may be hurled tens or hundreds of metres from the site of the explosion, as in this image. Such projectiles, known as ballistic blocks, are often massive enough to cause a distinct depression in the underlying sediment when they land.
