Inside a pillow mound, these flowlets of basalt lava are generally flowing towards you, including the one with a hammer in front (for scale). Notice the radial cooling joints from the outer skin and, in the pillow behind the hammer, a roughly triangular pocket in the middle right. The cooling joints do not continue into this area which was the tube through which more lava flowed to carry on extending the pillow. Pillows range from a few cm across to a few m.
