A'a flow surface, Halina pali, Hawaii

A well developed a'a lava flow surface covering a basalt lava flow. The skin of the lava flow has cooled and degassed sufficiently to respond to deformation in a brittle manner, and accordingly it breaks up into clinkery particles giving a very rough surface which in places may be razor-sharp. Contrast this with pahoehoe lava.
