Another substance which is used to dissolve gold is mercury. The use of mercury is common in many of the more remote parts of the world. Unmonitored disposal of mercury to the environment can lead to severe poisoning of wildlife. In the case here, a miner is heating up the mercury-gold mixture to vaporise the mercury and leave the gold behind. No doubt the mercury fumes will be inhaled during this process.
