Underground mines tend to present less of an environmental problem than those on the surface. In this disused tin mine in Cornwall (UK) the space left behind after the extraction of the ore from a steeply-dipping vein (a stope) can clearly be seen. Such a method of extraction is not usually possible using mechanised methods of extraction but is relatively efficient as little waste is formed.
