This is an example of a mineral deposit formed by physical processes. Alternating layers of kaolinite clay and lignite have been laid down in a bedded sequence, probably in a lacustrine (lake) setting. The clay is extracted using mechanical excavators and is dominantly used for making sanitary ware (basins, toilet cisterns, etc.). Note the gently-dipping slopes of the pit sides - to maintain stability. (Newbridge Clay Pit, South Devon, UK).
