Many minerals have an economic value - either because of their physical attributes (the ‘industrial’ minerals) or because metals can be extracted from them (the ‘metallic’ minerals). This sample contains coarse, yellow-brown crystals of the mineral sphalerite (zinc sulphide, ZnS). It is the main ore of the metal zinc. (An ore is a concentration of minerals which can be economically exploited).
