Even very small fossils like this Lower Carboniferous (325 million years) spore show the preservation of exquisite detail which enables them to be identified to help date rocks and interpret palaeoenvironments. Spores may be found in sporangia I the reproductive structures (as illustrated here) and these enable us to identify isolated dispersed spores to their parent plants.
