This cross section through a tree branch (30mm diameter) from the Lower Cretaceous (115 million years ago) can be seen in fine detail due to permineralisation of the tissues by calcium carbonate. The mineral infills and entombs the wood cells so that they are not affected by decomposition or compaction and the cell walls are preserved. The quality of preservation of cells enables us to identify the type of wood and the conditions under which the tree grew.. . . . . more
