This fossil mammal tooth comes from the Late Eocene (35 million years) of the Isle of Wight. Teeth like this are rare compared to other fossils, e.g. one per kilogram in bone-rich accumulations. They are, however, very informative as they enable identification of the tooth type and the mammal species which can then be applied in dating continental sequences, interpreting ancient diets and reconstructing ancient terrestrial communities and their palaeoecology. . . . . more
